The Romantic Era

Image
Claude Monet,  Impression, Sunrise , 1874, oil on canvas, 50 × 65 cm (Musée Marmottan, Paris) From his bedroom window in November of 1872 while staying at the Hotel de l’Amiraute in Le Havre, Monet painted the southeast view of the harbor early in the morning. I like the calm mood projected in this painting with the coolness of the blue shades. The three fishing boats seem to glide smoothly over the gentle rippled texture of the water with the rising sun's deep orange reflection near them. Soon, the calm will be interrupted by the loud noises of construction in the background. I can imagine myself sitting at the window, enjoying a hot beverage, and taking a deep breath while bracing myself for the busy, noisy day to come.  Monet was most likely trying to capture the peacefulness of the morning. Morality and the Art of the Classical Era

Image
I picked Morality and the Art of the Classical Era as that era is my favorite so far. I am not fond of art depicting violence or nudity which the earlier eras seemed to have an abundance of. I chose three portraits where the subjects are modestly dressed, and the subject matter is either more wholesome or was void of any portrayal of violence. Élisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun,  Self-Portrait with her Daughter, Julie , 1789, oil on canvas, 130 x 94 cm (Musée du Louvre). Speakers: Dr. Beth Harris and Dr. Steven Zucker. Le Brun was forced to flee France with her daughter to Italy because of her association with the Queen. My guess is that she painted this portrait while either in France or Italy. For my first portrait I chose Elisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun’s self-portrait with her daughter Julie, 1789. The painting is an oil on canvas,130x94 cm, and is on display at Musée du Louvre , in Paris. What is appealing for me about this painting is that it exhibits a strong bond betwee...

Lisa Rocha                                      EQUESTRIAN PORTRAIT OF CHARLES I                  This portrait of Charles I is on display at the National Gallery, London. It is an oil on    canvas 367 cm x 292.1 cm. It was painted in the English countryside. The  artist is Anthony     van Dyck, c. 1637-8. The king  sits in a regal pose with a spectator holding his plumed helmet waiting     to pass it to   him.    The King was later found guilty of being a traitor, a tyrant, and a murderer by the English     Parliament.  He was subsequently executed at the age of 48 for his crimes.     I like this portrait because of the outdoor setting with the horse who is painted showing he    is ready to prance around to show off a bit for the king b...

MAGI CHAPEL, MEDICI PALACE   FLORENCE, ITALY In my search for a work of visual art or architecture for this assignment, I kept feeling drawn to this photo of the  Magi Chapel located inside the Medici Palace, 1445-60 located in Florence, Italy. To avoid appearing ostentatious to the public, the patron of the Palazzo,  Cosimo de’ Medici (“il Vecchio”), wanted the family home to have a modest appearance on the exterior while strategically placing displays of wealth inside such as this chapel. I have included a link that shows the palace's modest exterior. It wasn't one specific thing that drew me to this, it was everything. The murals, the painting of the Madonna with the Christ child, the angels on the far wall, the altar, and the seclusion that it might give. It looks and feels like a place one could easily slip into for a few minutes of solitude, silence, and prayer when feeling overwhelmed with life. I cannot see myself owning the painting of the Madonna, but rather a p...

Berry Pickers

Image
Berry Pickers For this art analysis post, I have chosen an etching by James S. King called Berry Pickers . I purchased this framed print from a local antique/used goods store many years ago here in Fairbanks. I was drawn to it because of the tranquil scene created by the light tones near the top of the picture with the darker green of the berry bushes and grass in the foreground. I liked the soft lines used to create the curvy road they are strolling down to find the berries. Their beautiful dresses and aprons are made to look full, carefree, and feminine by using soft curved lines and tones.  While doing my research several years ago I discovered the original print, which was completed on April 8, 1892, is located in the Library of Congress. I was not successful in finding where the original print was created. I have posted 2 links below. The first one is a current webpage I found using Google that shows additional prints that are for sale on eBay. The second is a link to the pict...

Introduction January 23, 2024 Welcome to my first blog post. My name is Lisa Rocha. I am working on finishing the last few classes to complete my associate degree which I started over 20 years ago at UAF. Don't judge me. The life of a single parent can keep you so busy that you forget to put yourself first.   I don't paint or draw, so I decided to share a photo of the first piece that my middle daughter painted for the Alice in Wonderland show at the City Arts Gallery in Orlando, Florida several months ago. She has this and a few more pieces on her Instagram page under the name of amber_bortz_art. I love this piece because it reminds me of the many occasions that we watched that movie together when my girls were growing up. I only wish I was more experienced at Photoshop to catch the vibrance of the colors in the original photo she sent me. Were you able to find all of the Easter eggs she put in the painting?
